Songs I have written

Wake Up Call

Today marks the 14th Anniversary of 911.   In Jan 2002, I penned my thoughts about that day in a song called Wake Up Call.  It did not take long for this country to forget how it pulled together and threw off its’ petty arguments over things that make no difference for eternity. May we not wait for another major event to get our lives in order and our priorities straight.

Wake Up Call

Another ordinary Tuesday morning in the promised land
Feeling proud of what my life’s become
Sipping coffee in my kitchen I’ve got the kids off safe to school
Surrounded by the comfort of my home

Suddenly my life as I knew it
Was uncovered by four fiery planes
My selfish heart ripped open as the towers
Tumbled to the ground in flames
To sound the wake up call

The land of the free the home of the brave
We’ve a right to boast of who we are
Our freedoms like no other country with wealth beyond compare
Blessed by God this land that we adore

Suddenly our world as we knew it
Was exposed by men of wicked ways
Our complacent thoughts replaced by ones of horror
Yet who could know the change it made

People praying on their knees for comfort from above
Acknowledging we can’t always provide peace for ourselves
Partisan politicians finally stand on common ground
Demonstrating principles from which America was found

And we had our wake up call
To hold onto the things that really matter most of all
Exchanging our selfish hearts for ones that serve no matter what the cost
With compassion and love
Compassion and love

Fathers Day 2013

My father has always been my best supporter, teacher, encourager and a true leader by example.  A hard worker, able to do or try anything. He was a businessman, farmer, cowboy, mechanic, rancher, builder, renovator, carpenter, etc.. Opinionated and learned on many subjects.  He is a dreamer and has lived out a lot of his dreams unlike many who only dream.

He is a man of God, refined through testing, his heart softened as he sees God’s love, compassion and provision. Dad is a reader of the Scriptures, a daily filling of God’s Word that molds his Christian World View. He could not survive without the constant communication from his Lord and Savior.

I catch myself “Being in my dad’s skin” when I do and say and react to things these days.  It is as though I am him.  I like that.  I believe we  all end up being very similar to our parents whether we like it or not.  We grab onto the good and try to hone the bad.  I am my own person based on my life experiences but so much of me is from years of observation, conversation and education with dad.

The words below were composed in 1986. They seem fitting for a Father’s Day Tribute.  My earthly Father and Heavenly Father mean everything to me and have influenced who and what I am today.  What a fantastic blessing from God to be saved from a broken world, ave access to a caring heavenly and earthly father and the promise of a secure future.

Happy Father’s Day Dad

1) Praise the name of Jesus, every one whom He has won

From a world of sin and emptiness, a new life He’s begun

Praise Him for the good times and thank Him for the bad

Thank Him for His love for you, no reason to be sad

C) Because He chose you and me to be all that we can be

Never more in misery, He came to set us free

2) Live a life that’s worthy of this calling from the Lord

Never doubting that He cares for us, it says it in His word

Look forward to the day when we will see Him face to face

Then we’ll full understand, the meaning of His grace (Chorus)

3) Each day is a beginning, the start of something new

A chance to serve Him faithfully and our spirits to renew

And as a father guides his child like fingers in a glove

He’ll surely do the same for you with His never failing love (Chorus)

Loving Arms

Stop your running….I have “run” many times in my life, thinking that I could outrun whatever it was that was troubling me. If only I could stay busy enough to get to the next day.  God has always been there the next day or when I slowed down and stopped.  His Loving Arms were there for me to fall into and take refuge in.  I wrote this in 1986 and as I said “The years drift on by like they were days”  is so true.  Stop your running, slow down and fall into the arms of Jesus while you have the chance. As my good friend Jack Kelly says “You can almost hear the footsteps of our Lord coming”

1. Just sitting down one day my mind drifts away

Things going my way makes me stop and wonder

Looking back down the road

I used to carry all the load

All those years alone made me stop and wonder

c Living is hard enough without a shoulder to lean on

The years drift on by like they were days

You need some loving arms to wrap around you

And gently steer you in the right way

2. When I look and see all the beauty that surrounds me

A deep blue sky the mountains high its God who designed it

You’ll miss it if you move too fast

You know that kind of life can’t last

Turn your eyes upon the God who designed it

3. God reaches out to you if you’ll only say I do

Believe what He says is true and stop your running

A brand new life you’ll find

You know He’ll surely change your mind

If you’ll only take the time to stop your running

Peters Journey

The Apostle Peter was amazed that Christ chose him to be one of His disciples. He was a talented fishermen and a behind the scenes kind of guy. He accepted Christ’s offer though and had great zeal and passion in his journey. He also made claims he could not follow through on. The fear of rejection, being found out by man for his faith, overcame him. He was heartbroken after realizing what he had done. I have been in this same situation many times. Denying that I am a Christ follower and feeling ashamed when the “Cock Crowed”. Peter pressed on and overcame his fear. I too must press on. Peter became the ambassador we are all called to be. Not sinless but forgiven of our sin. Christ’s death and resurrection, what we celebrate this Easter, has provided the payment for our sins, past, present and future. Of this, I am certain.

I wrote Peters Journey in 1986. It is as much about me as Peter.

1)I met a man today he said why don’t you come my way
I will teach you things not many men can know
I will take you places you thought never you would roam
This is what the man said to me
As we walked along the Sea of Galilee
Peter, I know you’re a fisherman
But I’m going to make you a fisher of men today

2) Peter said Lord I’m a sinful man Why would you want me at your command
Don’t worry Peter your life is in my hands
So he dropped his nets and their journey, their journey began
This is what the Man Christ said to me
As we walked in the Garden of Gethsemane
Peter I know that you love me
But yet you’ll deny me three times tonight

3) That night they took Christ and led Him away
They said that You must die for the things that you say
Peter wanted to help Him but courage he had none
And as the cock crowed what Christ said had now been done
This is what Christ said to me
As He hung on the tree at Calvary
Peter, I know you’re a sinner
But I’m going to take all your sins away today, today. yes today
And Yours and Yours and Yours and Mine away today….

Perpendicular Motion (Leads to Horizontal Desire)

My good friend Joe and his wife Gloria lived near us a few years ago. They are a dear couple, Nashville Natives and UT Orange crazy. I miss seeing them. Joe knew that I liked to write songs and one day he said he had a thought around a song he would like me to write. He and Gloria like to dance. The concept of the song was perpendicular motion leading to horizontal desire. Hmmm… I thought on it and came up with a rhythmic melody and words to go with it. It can definitely apply to dance, perpendicular motion,  and the desires that can be stirred up. In marriage, our daily interaction with each other is our Perpendicular Motion. Life and time can easily turn early love into mundane and boring.  The concept is to keep it alive and fresh so the romance does not fade. So read on and see if I captured this idea.

1) She dreams about romance as he rushes out the door

Wishing he’d stay awhile and hold her in his arms

There was a time when they would laugh the night away

Together they’d dance beneath the stars

C) Perpendicular motion leads to horizontal desire

When two hearts move as one

Melodious magic casts its’ spell igniting inner fires

That never would have kindled on its’ own

2) Too many years of yearning, searching for the means

To tenderly show her that his love for her is strong

If only he’d go back to the time when love was new

Remembering how it felt to hold her all night long

Bridge) So dance the night away

Letting the music move your soul

Feel the rhythmic sway

Drawing out love that makes you whole

Why I sing these Blues

Deb and I lived in Texas in the early 80’s. We had just got married and moved to Longview so I could go back to school and finish my degree at LeTourneau College. To pay for school and housing, I had an automotive repair business called Todd’s Automotive, Deb worked at McDonald’s, and we both worked at Alpine Golf Club. In 1982, Lefty Crouch, a fired air traffic controller, joined Alpine GC. He moved to Longview from the Northeast. To add to his woes, Lefty had just divorced his wife and had to leave his 3 year old daughter behind. We developed a friendship and shared a passion for golf and music. I was playing regularly at McCann Street Bar and Grill on weekends. I had not started writing yet and played my favorite artists, Cat Stevens, Dan Fogelberg, James Taylor, Gordon Lightfoot and CSN. Lefty and I got together and decided to write a song about his current situation. It is right up there with the saddest of sad songs. We performed it together a few times and in my pile of songs it has set since 1982. I pull it out every once in awhile in remembrance of Lefty.

1) To never love is lonely to love and lose is cruel

Though my friends still take my side

There is no doubt, I’ve been a fool

The wars I’ve fought within my mind will never be understood

I’ve wrestled with these shadows so long

To try and beat them, Oh if I could

Chorus) It took too long to rescue me from the pillbox and the booze

You’re leaving just as I know I love you

That’s why I sing these blues, Why must I sing these blues

2) I watched you take my little girl knowing that I’m to blame

Now this old heart is breaking

I know it will never be the same

And the thought of love that pulled me through

Goes with you right out the door

And memories we’ll share no more

3) This test of love I’ve forced you through could have broken anyone

But you stayed by me until you knew

That our love could not be renewed

That’s why I sing these blues

Bridge) Yes I’m fine, I’ll be alright

These tears I cry are just beads of love

As they clear my eyes I can see

The sins I must rise above

Never Mind the Saying

In 1986, I worked with my good friend Bill Biedermann in a High School Youth group.  We did all the music for them. I wrote this song as much for them as for me.  It is a reminder of standing strong for what we know to be true, doing the right thing and calling on the source of truth and righteousness, Jesus Christ.

1)Never Mind the saying that cool is the rule

When it comes right down to it it’s you who’ll be the fool

The crowd is going nowhere that’s one thing for sure

Jesus has the answer He’ll help you to endure

To endure

2) Well now satan’s mighty clever he knows his days are few

He’ll trick you into thinking that what he says is true

But we have got the power through Christ’s blood on Calvary

To send old satan reeling back and bring him to his knees

To his knees

3) So when the pleasures of this world start tugging hard on you

When everything is caving in and you don’t know what to do

Remember God is faithful, He never will forsake

The ones who truly Love Him and all His mercy take

Yea all you gotta do is take it and he’ll give it to you

Carolyn

This song is about a good friend of mine named Carolyn Distelhorst.  She lived down the street from us in Fieldstone Farms and her 2 kids played with my Jeff and Jennel.  She divorced her husband and had to move away, back home to Ohio to be close to family.  Carolyn had a love for life and friends I had never seen.  I was almost afraid of it.  I only realized how dear a person she was until she was leaving.  I was sad and needed to write my thoughts down and share them with Carolyn.  I still think of her and still miss her.

1) Carolyn my friend, It’s hard to see you go

Carolyn Oh sweet Carolyn, There’s something you need to know

C1) I didn’t fully appreciate you’re loyalty and love for your friends

And now that you’re leaving my heart will be grieving

Until you come back to your home away from home

2) Who will pour the wine when we all get together

Who will call just to say hi or make a generous offer

Bridge) You’ve shown me that growing up doesn’t mean that

You can’t see life through the eyes of a child

An honest heart has to do what it believes

and not worry what others might find

3) Fare thee well my friend, I know that it won’t be forever

All my prayers I send, To you your son and your daughter

C2) Now that I fully appreciate Your Loyalty and Love for your friends

Even though you’re leaving I’ll be believing

That soon you’ll return to your home away from home

That soon you’ll return to your home

Yes I Love You

My wife Deb and I have been married for 31 years.  I have known her even longer as we were friends in High School.  Deb is my best friend and love of of my life.  God was very gracious to me with His choice of partner for me. I wrote this song for her on Valentines Day 1999.

1) I’ve loved you now forever

I couldn’t have done better than

To say we’ll be together

Until the morning sun won’t rise again

I wouldn’t want it any other way

Than to say I Love You

Oh, Yes I Love You

2) One way or another

We’ve always kept our love alive

The protecting hand of our father

He’s sheilded us from every side

In a world where it’s so easy to say goodbye

But not for you and me

Oh, that’s not you and me

Bridge) When I think about my life without you

It scares me half to death

The way your caring eyes look at me

Provides security

And I Love you

Oh, Yes I Love You

Without This Song

Without This Song was the first song I wrote.  It was in 1985 that I graduated from college at LeTourneau University in Texas and came home to Woodstock, Il to find a job.  I spent months looking and searching both for work and myself.  I found both.  UPS hired me in April 1985 and my journey with Christ was renewed that year as well. I am extremely grateful for both.

1) I’ve been alone most all my life, doing the things that only seemed right

I thought God was only there for me when I was scared and too afraid, to go on.

2) I finally came home yesterday from many long years of having it my way

It was so hard to do, but now that it’s through, I can’t believe it took this long

C) Now I’m free at last, from the sins of my past

How could I have gone so long without this song

3) This freedom came from an old friend, who I have known since way back when

He always stuck by my side, was always there as my guide because He chose me, long ago

4) Because God so loved the world, that He gave His only Son

That Whosoever believes in Him, should not die but live again

Live again, Live again, So says my Friend
